The rods are plastic and the end connectors are a heavy density foam- almost plastic in feel.

Depends on the designs. I did not buy anything special...just used a couple of queen flat sheets from the closet. I would definitely use a sheet and not a blanket. It's a lot lighter.

Twin - Queen size is plenty to use to cover any design that you may create with just that one set in the box.. Don't use a heavy blanket; the structure won't hold. Try using just a sheet or a fleece blanket.

Is is possible to buy more connectors?
I purchased two sets for my grandsons, so there are plenty of rods to make a large enough fort for both of them, but we run out of connectors.
